“A Prayer for the Glory of God” - Dr. Doug Melton
John 12:20-33
The glory of God is the beauty and excellence of who He perfectly is.
To glorify God is to display who God is.
--------------------------------
1. Why does God want us to glorify Him?
--------------------------------
• All creation was made for His glory.
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.“
Psalm 19:1
• He alone is worthy of glory.
“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all.“
1 Chronicles 29:11
“I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.“
Isaiah 42:8
• To glorify anything less is to live an endlessly unfulfilling life.
“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.”
Romans 11:36
“Wherever the soul of man turns, unless towards God, it cleaves to sorrow, even though the things outside God and outside itself to which it cleaves may be things of beauty.“
Augustine (Confessions)
--------------------------------
2. Your purpose in life is to glorify the Father.
--------------------------------
• from the moment you were born
“ … everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.“
Isaiah 43:7
• to being born again
“ … so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.“
Ephesians 1:12
• in your work
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.“
1 Corinthians 10:31
• when your work is done
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.“
Romans 8:18
--------------------------------
3. How can I align myself with the goal of the Father glorifying His name?
--------------------------------
• Starts with dying to ourselves - vs 24
• Hate your life - vs 25
• Serve and follow Jesus - vs 26
“To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.“
Colossians 1:27
• Faithful resolve - vs 27
• Pray for the Father to glorify Himself through you - vs 28
