“The Shepherds’ Point of View” - Dr. Doug Melton

Luke 2:15-20

1. Mary — a young woman who believed

“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.“

  Luke 1:38

“ … Greetings, O favored (charis) one, the Lord is with you!”

“ … Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor (charis) with God.“

  Luke 1:28

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.“

  Hebrews 11:6

2. Joseph — a young man who simply obeyed

“But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’ “

  Matthew 1:20-21

“When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.“

  Matthew 1:24-25

3. The baby

  • Helplessness and complete dependence

  • What God gave up for us

4. A manger

  • Poverty

  • Possible for the shepherds to see Him

  • Picture of His earthly ministry and the cost of discipleship

“And a scribe came up and said to Him, ‘Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.“

  Matthew 8:19-20

  • Prophecy is true.
