“Wisdom’s Children” - Dr. Doug Melton

  Luke 7:35

The rate at which collective human knowledge doubles:

  1900 - every 100 years

  1945 - every 25 years

  1982 - every 12 months

  2026 - every 12-24 hours

“The challenge has shifted from a scarcity of information to a scarcity of sense-making, …“

  Futurist Jim Carroll

Can a person get to heaven by being good?

Is there any possibility of life after a person dies?

  Is Jesus the one?

  What is true greatness?

Will God forgive me even if I’ve made really bad choices in life?

1. There is a world of difference between conventional wisdom and godly wisdom.

conventional wisdom - familiar, comfortable ideas that most of society readily accepts

“John the Baptizer came fasting and you called him crazy. The Son of Man came feasting and you called Him a boozer. Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.“

  Luke 7:33-35 (MSG)

2. How to have godly wisdom

  A. Faith in God, not your own merit

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, … ”

  Proverbs 9:10

  B. Turn from death and turn to the one who defeated death

“For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.“

  1 Corinthians 1:22–24

  C. Study and stand on the Word of God.

“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; … “

  Psalm 19:7

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.“

  Proverbs 2:6

  D. Pursue true greatness by pursuing the purposes of God.

“Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this:

Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.“

  Proverbs 4:5–7

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.“

  James 1:5
