“Blessed Assurance” - Dr. Doug Melton

  1 John 5:13

“There is no question whatsoever, that is of greater importance to mankind, and what is more concerns every individual person to be well resolved in, than this:

what are the distinguishing qualifications of those that are in favor with God, and entitled to His eternal rewards?”

Jonathan Edwards

How can I know if I am truly saved?

1. Compare John 20:31 with 1 John 5:13.

“ … but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.“

Gospel of John 20:31

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.“

1 John 5:13

  A. Those who are not saved and know they’re not saved -

(make no claim of salvation)

  B. Those who are saved but have no assurance they are saved - (doubt their salvation)

  C. Those who are saved and know they are saved -

(assurance of salvation)

  D. Those who are not saved but believe they are saved -

(false assurance of salvation)

2. Please consider who is saying this.

3. God has made it possible for you to know, NOW, your eternal destiny.

4. To believe is far more than intellectual assent.

An active staking of one’s life on the claims of God.

  Inner witness of the Spirit

  Outward evidence in your life

5. Assurance is founded on the objective truth of God’s Word.
