“The Gospel in One Verse” - Dr. Drew Melton

 John 1:1-18

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people [in Egypt]. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them…”

Exodus 3:7

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ.

Romans 3:23-24

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood.

—John 1:14 in The Message

In the beginning was the Word.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

By the W/word

God spoke.

In that Word was life and that life was light

so God said, “Let there be light.”

The light shines in the darkness,

a darkness over the surface of the deep, where the Spirit hovers.

A darkness that cannot overcome the light.

And God said, “Let us make a human.”

The Word’s life-light will be for the humans.

But we still chose darkness.

So the Word became human.

We have seen his glory.

We have witnessed his light.

We have been filled with grace and truth.

We have known God because the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
